Roads Most Taken

First Street. The one that leads to tomorrow.

Auburn Road. The second part of my porn name.

Route 34B. Where I spent my childhood worrying that I liked girls.

Tupper Road. Where I spent my teenagehood worrying that I liked girls and boys.

Ankeny. I painted my heart on the concrete with cigarette butts and learned to drink coffee from plastic cups.

Hawthorne Blvd. Is also a berry. Is also a strainer that you use to make drinks. Is also where my marriage smashed itself against ice and strained the world red.

Sandy. Wasn’t as dry as it sounds. It rained a lot. I waited at the crosswalk of my life for the light to change. It wasn’t the GO I expected.

First Ave. The one that leads to today.

Words written at Jewel Box.
Time Taken 3 minutes.
Brain on how isolated I felt growing up.

*note: All poems for the month of April are memoir poems in the form of lists.
